Professor Smith is a Director of Adventus Technology Inc and has been Professor at the University of Houston (UH), USA, since 1988. He has served as the Chair of the Basic Sciences Department (1990-2001) and as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research (2001-2003) at UH. Professor Smith has held the distinguished Greeman-Petty Professorship in Vision Development since 1987 and has been Dean of UH College of Optometry since 2003.
Professor Smith currently serves on the Board of Directors of Prevent Blindness Texas and on the Secretariat of the Board of Directors for the Partnership Foundation for Optometric Education.
He is a past President of the American Optometric Foundation; US Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO); a past Member and Chair of NEI's Central Visual Processing Study Section and a past Member of the NIH National Advisory Eye Council. He was recipient of the Glenn Fry Award and the Prentice Medal (2010) from the American Academy of Optometry for his research on the role of vision in regulating refractive development and eye growth.
