Professor Parel is Chief Scientific Officer, as well as a Director of Adventus. He is a Research Professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and since 1995 has held the Henri and Flore Lesieur Chair in Ophthalmology at the University of Miami, Florida, USA, as well as a secondary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering since 1994. He is also Professeur Visiteur (Honorary Faculty) of the Université de Liège School of Medicine, Belgium since 1998 and Honorary Faculty, Universités de Paris, France since 1994.
Professor Parel has over 200 refereed publications and more than 30 book chapters. He is a reviewer for 25 international scientific journals and serves on the review committees for the USA, Canadian, Israeli, French and Spanish government medical research agencies. His areas of research include development of novel polymers, laser systems and devices for advanced ophthalmic diagnostics, therapy and surgery and the study of optical and mechanical properties of ocular tissues and function. Professor Parel has developed around 50 patents.
Professor Parel was the founder and has been President of the Accommodation Club since 1991 and has been an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering since 2001.
